Pulled Away by What We Have To Do

Pulled Away by What We Have To Do

Have you ever met someone famous?  Even better…Have you ever had someone famous come inside your house!?  Maybe it was a movie star or a lead singer of a band.  Whoever it may have been, you were probably pretty stoked to have them in your house!

Imagine you had an appointment with Jesus.  Yes…the real Jesus…not some weirdy that walks around saying he is Jesus but the actual REAL Jesus from the bible. He is quite the famous character, I must say.  Anyways, your appointment is at 5pm on the dot.  Would you get to 5 o'clock and think “meh…I actually have something more important to do right now?!”  Seriously!? What could be more important in your day today than a one on one with the REAL JESUS!?  You answered it…nothing…NO-THING.

We would hopefully all agree that in reality, there would be nothing on this green earth more important than a one on one with Him.  I mean, He is the one who created you!  He knows what makes you tick!  He knows exactly what to say that will help you through the stressful, frustrating, and exhausting things that you are facing today.  He only speaks what He hears the Father say concerning you today.

In our Christian bubbles, we would say “I would never miss a real deal one on one with Jesus!”  Unfortunately, we do it all the time.  Jesus moves into our home (hearts) and wants to deliver us some prime goods straight from the mouth of God but we are too busy.  It seems that instagram, Facebook, work, recreation, projects, business, entertainment, iPhones, hobbies, and everything else becomes more important than what God wants to say to us today.

There is actually a story of this in the bible, and we are gonna check it out.  Its found in Luke 10:38-42.  Here’s what it says in the Message Bible:
38-40 As they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of Martha welcomed him and made him feel quite at home. She had a sister, Mary, who sat before the Master, hanging on every word he said. But Martha was pulled away by all she had to do in the kitchen. Later, she stepped in, interrupting them. “Master, don’t you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand.”
41-42 The Master said, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.”

There was obviously something about Jesus that Mary was seeing but Martha wasn't…It says that Mary was hanging on every word that He said.  Martha on the other hand had more important things to do.  Time with the master was inconvenient to her plans.  SHE HAD JESUS SITTING ON HER COUCH, AND IT DIDN'T EVEN REMOTELY IMPACT HER!!  Her focus was more on all that she had to do or get done.  Mary on the other hand was focused on every word that was coming out of Jesus’ mouth.

Just like Jesus said to Martha, He is saying to you today and every moment of everyday…"one thing only is essential.“  Would you like to know the only thing that is essential for today?  It’s what He is saying concerning you today.  Nothing else matters.  Too often, I am just like Martha in this story.

The world has enough Marthas…always to busy for time with the Lord.  God is needing us to take inventory of our lives and get rid of all the pointless time wasters.  He is needing us to be like Mary.  Hanging on every word He says.
