Only One Thing

Only One Thing

Have you ever been distracted? Have you ever been busy? In this day and age, it seems like we are always busy all the time! And the things we are busy about aren’t necessarily bad things, they’re actually usually good things. Things like going to work, spending time with family, serving and going to church, taking kids to practices or games or activities, housework, yard work, shopping- the list goes on! There’s always something we “have” to do.

But somewhere in our daily busy lives, are we making the time for what matters the most? It’s easy to get wrapped up in all the things- even things I’m doing for God, for my family, things that need to be done- and forget the ONE thing that matters: sitting at the feet of Jesus.

As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”  - Luke 10:38-42

Jesus said that listening to Him is the only thing worth being concerned about! Mary honored Jesus by valuing Him over anything else she could have been doing at that moment. In contrast, Martha dishonored Jesus by valuing what she was doing over Him- and she missed out. She ended up being frustrated, worried and upset.

It’s time that we put first things first, because what Jesus is saying to us is more important than what we can do for Him.

So sit at his feet first, and then go do all the things! And who knows, you may even find yourself not so worried and upset over everything you have to do!
