Killing Comparison

Killing Comparison

Let me start out by asking a few questions. Now, don’t raise your hand, but how many of us have ever thought to ourselves, “what I’m doing isn’t that important”? How many of us have ever compared our life to someone else’s? How many of us have ever envied someone’s position before or thought, “I wish I could do what they’re doing”?

I could raise both my hands to those questions, and chances are, you could, too. But the truth is- if you are a born again believer- you are a part of the body of Christ, and God has a spot in His church just for you! He’s made each one of us for a specific and unique purpose, and He’s made us to fit. Check out 1 Corinthians 12:14-21(NLT):

14 Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. 15 If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything?
18 But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. 19 How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”

And verse 27 of the same chapter says this:
27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.

So we see that God has placed each member of His body just where He wants it! Every time we compare ourself to someone else, it’s like our ear saying, “I wish I was an eye!”. Sounds silly, doesn’t it?

Ephesians 4:16 (NLT)
16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

Think about all the parts of the human body and how necessary each one is. It’s the same for the body of Christ. When each part is in the right place and functioning the way it was made to work, then the body of Christ can be healthy to reach and go and be Christ in this world!

So next time those thoughts of comparison try to get you down and out of your spot, just remember that it’s God who places each one where it pleases Him! So let yourself be “placed” by Him, just like you would place a puzzle piece in just the right spot. Do your own special work, use the gift he has given you to serve others well, and together we will be the body of Christ!
