Divided Loyalty
Loyal friends are hard to come by these days. They’re
trustworthy, they will never say a bad thing about you, they will defend you
and fight for you. Now think about someone that might be loyal at times and
disloyal at other times. You simply can’t trust them because they’re are
unstable, and unpredictable. Will they say good things about you, or will they
trash talk you. James chapter 1 speaks about disloyalty, and it’s a major heart
check for me. Not in the context of being a loyal friend, but in the context of
being loyal to God and trusting His word.
James 1 NLT 5. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and
he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. 6 But when you ask
him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with
divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed
by the wind. 7 Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
8 Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in
everything they do.
We all have issues in our life at any given time, and need
help. Whether it’s asking for help to overcome a personal issue, help with
finances, parenting, professions, etc. We need help, but are we asking for
help? And equally important, are we asking for help with our trust only in God?
When you go to God to ask Him for help, do you later take on the burden of what
you’re facing? If so, you might be resembling divided loyalty, and you may as
well not have asked, because James said if that’s the case, don’t expect
anything from the Lord! Let’s ask God for help, but before we do, let’s put our
whole trust in Him so He really can go to work on our behalf.
